The village of Parekklishia

Το Χωριό ΠαρεκκλησιάThe village of Parekklishia lies four kilometers north-east of the side of ancient Amathunda, hidden behind of “Mandia” hill (16 km north-east of Limassol). The village name is possibly Derived from either the church of Timios Stavros, built in the 12th or 13th century, or from the words “Paliogliso” or “Palioglisia”, which are referred to in Venetian maps and settlements found near the village itself, seems to be hidden behind the mountains. This is due to attacks by invaders in ancient and medieval times from neighboring countries.

The village is built 150 meters above the sea level, its northern part reaching the forest some 600 meters above sea level. The southern coastal part of Parekklishia administrative boundaries is considered to be part of the tourist area of Limassol-Amathunda area.

Το Χωριό ΠαρεκκλησιάThe existence of the village itself is largely due to the creative activities of the people of the surrounding villages of Kellaki, Prastio, Eptagonia, Vasa and Sanida. These villagers being the land owners of the Parekklishia land used to come from their village in fall to prepare the fields of sowing and in summer for harvesting or collect their carobs and olives produce. They created the side of the “Orites” a housing site round the Church of Timios Stavros.

Nowadays, things seem to be on a course of change. People are more influenced by the easy-going lifestyle of the neighboring tourist area. The sector of agriculture seems to be deteriorating and the fall of water of water levels is such that young people are driven away from working the land and more and more they are employed in neighboring hotels and shops. At the same time, there is a huge building activity monitored by a need in the market for residences in peaceful surroundings; both foreigners and locals search for a place away from the hustle and the bustle of the city to make their home. As a result, the number of inhabitants keeps increasing and has now reached the number of 1500 compared to 700 people living in the village in 1974.
